Rolling drums and quicksilver accordion licks, earthy vibes and thoughtful reflections mingle on Matuto?s latest refinement of their Appalachia-gone-Afro-Brazilian sound, The Devil and The Diamond (Motema Music; release: May 14th, 2013).

In Brazil, Matuto is slang for Country Boy, but this NYC based group of urbanized virtuosos is emerging as one of the world?s hottest international touring acts. Recently awarded the title of ?American Musical Ambassadors? by the U.S. State Department, Matuto has been hailed as "seductively cross cultural" by the Chicago Tribune, and praised by the Sun Times as "the height of world music sophistication."

Matuto's songs can sway hips just as easily as spark insights. On stage, the instruments swirl together, bobbing in and out, whirling around the tension at the core of Matuto?s music: the push and pull between the Latin syncopations of Brazilian music and the folk traditions of the American South. It?s Bluegrass meets Brazil. It?s an unlikely combination on paper, but on the dance floor, it just feelsright.

In 2002, Clay Ross embarked on a musical odyssey that brought him closer to home. The South Carolina native moved to New York to pursue a jazz career and several years later found himself in Recife, Brazil studying the region’s folkloric music. Along the way he rediscovered the straightforward songs of his native South.


The guitarist and singer titled his Ropeadope Records debut Matuto, after a Brazilian slang reference to a man from the backcountry. Described as “Weird and Wonderful… Unorthodox and Delightful” by Jazz Times Magazine, the set allows Ross to carve a niche in a musical tradition created on another continent. He performs North American folk songs like “Home Sweet Home” and Blind Willie Johnson’s “John the Revelator” over South American rhythms Maracatu, Forró, and Coco typical of the northeastern region of Brazil.


In recording the album, Ross called upon the talents of NYC’s most sought-after musicians, including master accordionist Rob Curto. Born in New York, Curto is widely regarded as forró’s foremost ambassador in the States. An early devotee of North American swing music, bebop piano, funk, rock, and blues, he has combined these influences with his mastery of their Brazilian counterparts forró, chorinho, samba, maracatu, and frevo to produce stunning new results. He spent years living and playing in Brazil, completely absorbing and interpreting the country’s musical traditions. Curto was a member of the original scene that established forró, the dance music of northeastern Brazil, as an official dance craze in downtown New York.


Ross and Curto began exploring a shared musical vision and set about combining their individual repertoires into an extensive library of Pan-American influences. Focusing their talents, resources, and experience Ross and Curto set out to establish Matuto as a band.


In February of 2009 they received a prestigious Fulbright Grant and completed a six-week residency in Recife, Brazil. There, with drummer Richie Barshay (Herbie Hancock Quartet) and bassist Edward Perez, the band thrilled audiences at the Garanhuns Jazz Festival and the massive Rec Beat Festival, finding equal comfort along side jazz and blues legends, folk music traditionalists, and indie rock experimentalists. They also lead educational workshops in underserved communities and performed public concerts in theaters and auditoriums across the city. Later that year they headlined the American Folk Festival in Bangor, ME and the Montmagny World Accordion Festival in Canada.


Employing renowned musicians across NYC’s diverse jazz, roots, and world music scenes, Matuto features violin, guitar, accordion, bass, drums, and various Brazilian percussion instruments: the alfaia (a large, wooden, rope-tuned bass drum), the pandeiro (a Brazilian tambourine), the berimbau (a single-string on a bow struck with a small stick), and the agogô (a pair of small, pitched metal bells.)


In May 2013 the band will release their second full length album, “The Devil and the Diamond” on Motéma Music. This recording reflects the inspiring live show that the band has developed over hundreds of performances around the world. Appalachian fiddle tunes bounce with a Northeastern Brazilian lilt while the one string Berimbau resonates with a strangely effective blues riff. Curto spins long chromatic melodies over intricate arrangements and infectiously funky folkloric rhythms. Like a true southern preacher, Ross delivers colorfully satirical lyrics reminiscent of David Byrne, Tom Ze, and Caetano Veloso.


With an honest love for roots music, genuine Brazilian styles, and improvisational experimentation, Matuto creates a unique and inspired sound from the heart of New York City’s diverse musical culture.


The Band


Clay Ross


Like a true southern preacher, Clay Ross delivers colorfully satirical lyrics reminiscent of David Byrne, Tom Ze, and Caetano Veloso. A virtuosic guitarist, his unique style combines the flatpicking prowess of bluegrass legend Tony Rice with the sonic depth of jazz master Bill Frisell, plucking three chord folk melodies or sophisticated Brazilian Choros with equal ease.


Rob Curto


Rob Curto is widely regarded as forró’s foremost ambassador in the States. An early devotee of North American swing music, bebop piano, funk, rock, and blues, he has combined these influences with his mastery of their Brazilian counterparts forró, chorinho, samba, maracatu, and frevo to produce stunning new results. He spent years living and playing in Brazil, completely absorbing and interpreting the country’s musical traditions.


Ze Mauricio


Ze Mauricio grew up immersed in the percussive traditions of his homeland. He is an original member of “Cyro Baptista’s Beat the Donkey” and performs with an eclectic blend of NYC bands. He is a master of the Pandiero (Brazilian Tamborine) and his vast palate of percussion sounds give Matuto a deep swinging dance groove.


Richie Barshay


Most noted for his work with the Herbie Hancock Quartet, Richie Barshay has established himself as a prominent musical voice of his generation and is regarded as “a player to watch” by JazzTimes magazine. On tour and on recordings, his eclectic resume so far includes Hancock, Chick Corea, Esperanza Spalding, Lee Konitz, The Klezmatics, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, Natalie Merchant, David Krakauer, Fred Wesley, Claudia Acuña and Pete Seeger among others.


Michael Loren Lavalle


The son of two musicians, Michael Loren Lavalle was raised on all genres of American Music. Now, matched with a profound knowledge of musics from Brazil, he has become an in-demand bassist and percussionist on NYC’s creative music scene. He has worked with a vast and diverse array of artists and co-produced the album “Edge of Everything” by Greta’s Bakery which was released by Decca/Universal Music Group in 2009.


Mazz Swift


Mazz Swift is a native New Yorker, who began playing the violin at age 6. She graduated from the High School of the Performing Arts, during which time she made her solo public performance debut on the stage of New York’s Alice Tully Hall, performing alongside members of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. She later attended The Juilliard School of Music, but left in the middle of her 3rd year to pursue a more organic approach to music making. Consequently, she has recorded and performed with a wide variety of artists including Whitney Houston, Perry Farrell, Kanye West, Com­mon, and Jay-Z.

ABOUT THE BAND
Black Rock Zydeco delivers a mix of stand-out original songs and Cajun/Creole favorites from classic and contemporary performers. Vocal harmonies, inventive arrangements, and an energetic stage presence all come together for a musical experience that gets crowds moving.
Ron Kowalewski (vocals, accordion)
Ron Kowalewski is a professional musician, educator, and songwriter whose modern zydeco anthem “Two Step Gorilla” has become a fan favorite (and was recently chosen as song of the day by Buffalo’s popular “Good Neighborhood” web site). Ron is well-known for his crowd-pleasing performances with the five-time ArtVoice Best of Buffalo award-winning Skiffle Minstrels.
Kathryn Koch (vocals, saxophone)
Buffalo native Kathryn Koch is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist best known for her powerhouse vocals with acclaimed indie folk band Redheaded Stepchild. After many years in Nashville, TN, Kathryn recently returned to Buffalo where, in addition to playing sax and singing with BRZ, she continues to showcase her songwriting and re-interpretation of traditional folk music as a solo act. Kathryn also sings and plays harmonica with Alan “ADub” Whitney and the Healing Committee.
Tyler Westcott (vocals, guitar)
Tyler Westcott is a multi-instrumentalist wunderkind with a plethora of musical tastes and interests. He is a founding member of the FolkFaces, a Buffalo-based band playing a mix of blues, ragtime, bluegrass, folk (obviously), jazz, punk, rockabilly, and more. He also appears with La Coeur, The Observers, and Buffalo Hot Jass Revival.
Tim Gettings (bass)
Although he claims to be “old as dirt” and “unable to remember his middle name,” Tim never fails to keep Black Rock Zydeco on the funky side. He’s been playing in pop and blues bands since the 1970s, worked as a session guitarist with Tommy Calandra, and sat in with Spoon and the House Rockers at The Buena Vista. Tim is also a member of Dawgs In The City, for whom he plays guitar and harmonica.
Elton Hough (drums)
Elton Hough hails from a musical family and has studied and performed as percussionist across the country. He enjoys a full-time position as staff drummer at Buffalo’s Redeeming Fire Fellowship Church and Greater Works Baptist Church. Additionally, he performs with Bobby Label and the Damn Fine Rebels, Nelson and the Heaters, and The Steve Woosley Trio.
Stan Whatley (scrub board)
Born in New Orleans of Cajun descent, Stan’s first exposure to zydeco music was seeing the king of zydeco himself, Clifton Chenier, playing at Tipitina’s. Relocating to Houma, LA, (in the heart of Cajun country) Stan continued to explore Cajun and zydeco music. After moving to Buffalo, he began playing scrub board and has performed regularly with Lee Ron Zydeco as well as Mumbo Gumbo
