Event Description
Bernard Shakey Film Fest: Muddy Track

Long one of folk and rock’s most respected artists, Neil Young—under the pseudonym Bernard Shakey—has also been making films for over four decades, from concert movies JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST (1974) and RUST NEVER SLEEPS (1979), to GREENDALE (2003) and other fiction features. This weeklong survey offers a rare opportunity to discover another side of Young’s creative genius, both behind and in front of the camera. The program includes MUDDY TRACK (1987), a one-of-a-kind chronicle of a European tour with Crazy Horse, and the newly restored director’s cut of HUMAN HIGHWAY (1982), a wildly anarchic satire of Cold War America starring Young, Dean Stockwell, Sally Kirkland, Russ Tamblyn and Devo.

The Hollywood Theater in Dormont is proud to present all nine of the films made by his Shakey Pictures Productions. This festival played the IFC Center and AFI Theaters most recently, and we feel extremely lucky to be showing it in Pittsburgh at the Hollywood.

Films include:

- Friday, June 26th at 8:00pm, JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST (1972).  Young's first feature film.

- Friday, June 26th at 10:00pm: HUMAN HIGHWAY - DIRECTOR'S CUT (1982). Mind-bending 1982 post-apocalyptic musical comedy including Dean Stockwell, Russ Tamblyn, Dennis Hopper and Devo.

- Sunday, June 28th at 7:00pm: RUST NEVER SLEEPS (1979). A concert fantasy - Crazy Horse's performance is as about moving as rock can offer.

- Sunday, June 28th at 9:00pm: THE MONSANTO YEARS (2015). A very special work-in-progress screening, this is a document of the recording of the upcoming album ‘The Monsanto Years’ with Neil Young & Promise of the Real.

- Monday, June 29th at 7:30pm: SOLO TRANS (1984) & A DAY AT THE GALLERY (2012). Solo Trans is the highly lauded 1983 Neil Young concert film directed by Hal Ashby, only seen limited release on LaserDisc.  A Day at the Gallery is Bernard Shakey’s silent film made in 2012.

- Tuesday, June 30th at 7:30pm: MUDDY TRACK (1987). A POV trip thru the 1987 Neil Young and Crazy Horse European Tour.

- Wednesday, July 1st at 7:30pm: NEIL YOUNG TRUNK SHOW. Jonathan Demme filmed two 2007 shows at Pennsylvania’s Tower Theater, easily the equal ofHeart and his classic Talking Heads feature, Stop Making Sense.

- Thursday, July 2nd at 7:30pm: GREENDALE (2003). Shot with low-tech equipment, the grainy, overlit Greendale sets a dreamy, David Lynch-like mood as Young tells the story of the fictional Green family, who live in a Northern California town that bears their name.

Please note that we will not be showing Dead Man and Year of the Horse, because they are not owned by Shakey Pictures and were not able to be booked as part of our festival.
