Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Workshop
- Reserve
- Details
Join the Stroud Water Research Center and Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy for this free two-day training to learn how to sample the biological aspects of a stream. The macroinvertebrates (insects, mollusks, & crustaceans) found in a stream are excellent indicators of the condition of both water quality and habitat. This is an introductory to intermediate level training that will identify organisms to the order and in some cases family level.
This workshop will focus on collection techniques for macroinvertebrate identification in rocky or muddy bottom streams. We will also discuss the WikiWatershed.org toolkit which brings many freshwater watershed stewardship and monitoring tools available to citizens, teachers, naturalists and professionals. Participants should bring a lunch and knee boots (if you have them), and dress appropriately for the outdoors.
