A Night of Art and Technology with Aurora Halal, Sam Rolfes, and Friends

Sat, May 18, 2019, 9:00 p.m.

Join PopRally for an immersive night of art and technology, featuring access to the exhibition New Order: Art and Technology in the Twenty-First Century, an open bar, and sound and light interventions by Aurora Halal, Sam Rolfes, and friends.

Get ready to experience the unfamiliar, the weird, and the strange as you encounter technology beyond anything you’re used to. Invited artists will manipulate the physical and digital worlds through light, sound, and performance inspired by MoMA’s New Order exhibition. Digital artist Sam Rolfes, performance artist Justin Shoulder, DJ Sharp Veins will present a real-time 3-D performance melding sound, physical movement projection-mapping, and 360-degree projections in the Marron Atrium. The evening will culminate with a live DJ set by Aurora Halal, who will be surrounded by original visuals from light-design studio Nitemind.

Doors open at 9:00 p.m. Admission includes open bar, DJ sets, performance, and after-hours access to New Order: Art and Technology in the Twenty-First Century.

Tickets ($25) are available online.

You must be 21 or older to attend this event. Please enter through The Ronald S. and Jo Carole Lauder Building entrance at 11 West 53 Street

Aurora Halal is a producer, a DJ, and the creator of Brooklyn’s influential Mutual Dreaming party series and the Sustain-Release festival. Her shadowy, psychedelic live and DJ sets blend a hazy sensuality and a metallic dancefloor intensity that’s at turns playful, dark, acidic, hard, euphoric, and vulnerable. No matter the project, she treats dance music as an arena for transformation, and the underground as the final destination. She has spent the last few years touring some of the most vital clubs, raves, and festivals, including Unsound, Atonal, and Nachtdigital, and has appeared regularly at Amsterdam’s De School and Berlin’s legendary Berghain.

Sam Rolfes is an improvisational 3-D animator and VR/motion-capture performer and director who explores experimental narrative performance via fragmented, 3-D animation and digital sculpture within game engines. With his brother and creative partner Andy Rolfes, Sam has collaborated with numerous musicians, fashion designers, and companies, including Cashmere Cat, Amnesia Scanner, Adult Swim, Nicola Formichetti, KAIMIN, Nike, Josh Pan, Skrillex, Lunice, Denzel Curry, Amnesia Scanner, Danger Incorporated, Dawn Richard, Kingdom, Danny Brown, Super Deluxe, Danny L Harle, and Caroline Polachek, and has performed internationally at Unsound Festival in Krakow, Sonic Acts in Amsterdam, and Day for Night in Houston, among others.

PopRally is a series of events at The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 that serve as a gateway for young and diverse audiences to engage with MoMA. Led by a cross-departmental committee of Museum staff, PopRally produces dynamic programs including artist collaborations, performances, film screenings, and digital content that encourage new and experimental ways of encountering modern and contemporary art.

This event will be filmed/photographed. Purchasing a ticket and/or entering this space indicates your consent to being filmed/photographed and your consent to MoMA's use of your recorded image for any and all purposes.
